When Nara was only one year old, she moved to Rio de Janeiro with her parents, Jair and Altina Leão, and her sister Danuza. In her teenage years, she learned to play the guitar from Solon Ayala and Patricio Teixeira, and later from Roberto Menescal and Carlos Lyra.
